This is the 2nd equinox of the year, the first being in March. It celebrates the Southern Hemisphere’s fall and the Northern Hemisphere’s spring. It’s time to say goodbye to Summer and to welcome the fall, until December Solstice, which marks the winter season. The Southern Hemisphere welcomes the spring season, the new season of new beginnings.

This is not an all day celebration, they should occur at the exact moment the sun crosses the celestial equator the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s Equator . This is the moment that the earth’s rotational axis is neither tilted away from or towards the sun.

This year 2016, the sun crosses from north to south, today September 22nd at 14.22 UTC, due to time zone differences there are at least 10 hours ahead of UTC.

The term equinox comes from Latin words, aequus meaning equal and nox, meaning night and this has led to the conventional wisdom that we all experience day and night, 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night time on the day of the September equinox. However, most places on earth enjoy more than 12 hours of daylight on this day. This is because of two reasons, the way sunrise and sunset are defined an atmospheric refraction of sunlight.

Enjoy your day of this new season – Equinox
